Baseball's antitrust exemption (MLB 독점 금지 면제):  1922년 대법원이 메이저 리그 베이스볼의 사업이 "주 간 상거래"를 구성하지 않으며 따라서 기업들이 서로 공모 하는 것을 금지 하는 셔먼 법에서 면제된다는 다소 믿기 어려운 판결에서 비롯된 것

 

성공적인 Cartels의 특징: 예시) OPEC

• 담합 멤버는 시장에 의해 생긴 대부분의 output을 갖는다: 중동 석유
• 담합 멤버는 동종의 output을 생산한다: 석유
• Cartel must be able to divide market into territories controlled by each member and to establish production quotas: 중동국가끼리 territory 나눔
• Cartel must be able to prevent cheating by members: 카르텔은 회원의 부정행위 방지할 수 있다

Monopsony(독점): monopoly demand

• 하나의 공급자만 존재하는 시장
• 스포츠 리그는 드래프트된 선수의 immobility, 고도의 전문 스킬 때문에 monopsonies

Free agency: a player whose contract is no longer held exclusively by one professional sports club

Reserve clause : In the US professional sports, the reserve clause was part of a player contract which stated that the rights of players were retained by the team upon the contract's expiration.

Players under these contracts were not free to enter into another contract with another team

In other words, if the reserve clause is on the contract, even if he becomes  a free agent, he cannot chage jobs until the team allows it.

Labor dispute

• Strikes and lockouts : 파업, 폐쇄

* lockouts: close office or factory by the employer. This is to prevent the employes from going to work until the employer agree to certain conditions.

• Salary caps : 팀 머니의 전체가 제한되어 있다 : limit to the total amount of money that NBA teams are allowed to pay their players. 2019~2020 the cap is $109,140,000

불법 약물과 전문 스포츠

각각의 스포츠 리그는 금지 약물 문제를 갖고 있다: bans on "recreational" drugs, "performance enhancing" drugs

*recreational drugs : cannabis, alcohol, nicotine, caffeine prescription drugs

전문 축구 리그의 경우

MLS : single entry league

The average annual salary for an MLS player was only about $186,000 in 2014. That same year,  the median salary in MLS was less than half the average- only $80,000

Thus, MLS is a monopsony, but it shows that if a company owns the entire teams, the salaries of players can be lowered. 

WNBA, like MLS, has lowered the salary of players by owing the entire teams.
